Much of what is said in the film is conveyed with visual metaphors, and after the 7-minute mark Titov decisively charts his own path, going past the timeline of the original text (which originally finished kind-of in mid-note, so to speak, with the fates of the characters unresolved) to provide his own version of how the story could end (quite a valid one I think, but you be the judge). Overall, the screenplay is quite original - Titov did a lot of work on it and I think he did his research and chose what to include quite deliberately. The director, Mihail Titov, made a number of interesting animated films in the Perestroika era, most of them literary adaptations and increasingly avant-garde. It is based on both the story, as well as Dostoyevsky's unused ideas for the story, including the lyrics of the song (see links in comment I will post below) The Crocodile / Крокодил (1991) (with English/Russian/Czech subtitles) He also broke his friendship with the crocodile forever.Hi everyone, I thought some people here might be interested in this rather one-of-a-kind adaptation of the 1856 satirical story. As soon as they reached near the shore, the monkey jumped on to the tree and saved his life. The crocodile turned back to swim to the tree so that the monkey might take his heart. But he should have told him earlier because he has left his heart on the tree. The monkey though scared, kept his head cool and said that he was willing to do anything for the crocodile and his wife. In the middle of the river, where it was the deepest, the crocodile told the monkey about his wife’s demand. The monkey agreed but because he could not swim, he climbed on the crocodile’s back to reach his home. He wanted to please his wife because he loved her but at the same time, he was fond of his friend also. The crocodile resisted, to which his wife got furious and dived into the water and hid herself. The crocodile’s wife now wanted to eat the heart of such a good monkey. The crocodile told her about the monkey, who used to send fruits for her everyday. His wife got very angry and wanted to know who his friend was, who was so fond of him.

One day the crocodile stayed longer than usual with the monkey. They met daily and never got tired of talking. The monkey used to give delicious fruits to the crocodile and sent some for his wife too. Once a monkey lived in a fruit tree on the bank of a river.
